Dietitian

A dietitian is an expert in identifying and treating disease-related malnutrition and in conducting medical nutrition therapy, for example designing an enteral tube feeding regimen or mitigating the effects of cancer cachexia.

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are food and nutrition experts who have met the following criteria to earn the RDN credential:

Completed a minimum of a bachelor’s degree

Completed an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program

Passed a national examination

Completed continuing professional educational requirements

Podiatrist

Podiatrists treat problems with a patient’s foot or lower leg. They can set fractures, write prescriptions, recommend physical therapy, and do surgery as needed. They may assist other doctors in treating a health issue.

Podiatrists may also:

Diagnose foot problems like skin and nail diseases, congenital (at-birth) deformities, tumors, and ulcers

Treat conditions like corns, arch problems, heel spurs, shortened tendons, bone disorders, and cysts

Make flexible casts to hold foot and ankle injuries like sprains or fractures steady

Talk with patients about preventive foot care

Refer patients to other doctors when they feel that symptoms of the foot are related to different disorders in other body systems

Cardiac Sonography

Cardiac sonographers are health care professionals specially trained to use imaging technology to help physicians diagnose heart problems in patients. They operate ultrasound equipment that provides moving 2-D or 3-D images of the heart and its chambers.

Common responsibilities and duties of a cardiac sonographer include:

Performing echocardiogram tests to obtain important data about patients

Looking at blood flow, valve function, and chamber size to determine the overall condition of the heart

Assisting physicians in the diagnosis of patients with heart conditions

Accurately recording patient data and test results

Helping with administrative duties such as scheduling appointments or cleaning equipment

Dental

Dentists diagnose and treat problems with patients’ teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth. They provide advice and instruction on taking care of the teeth and gums and on diet choices that affect oral health.

Dentists typically do the following:

Remove decay from teeth and fill cavities

Repair or remove damaged teeth

Place sealants or whitening agents on teeth

Administer anesthetics to keep patients from feeling pain during procedures

Prescribe antibiotics or other medications
